Text Box: The Root Chakra:

The root chakra, also known as the first chakra, is associated with the color red. This chakra is the grounding force that allows us to connect to the earth energies and empowers our life force. It is through this chakra that the child feels a strong connection with its birth mother and also bonding with its nuclear family. In it through this vortex in which our survival instincts spring forth. Experiencing confusion, distraction, and disconnection are indicators that this chakra is not functioning optimally.

Root Chakra - The First Chakra
The first energy center is found at the base of the spine. The activity of this chakra creates our sense of security and general well-being. This chakra is the grounding force that allows us to connect to the earth energies and empower our beings. Focusing one's attention on the color of a cherry popsicle or a juicy red apple can help bring our energetic body "down to earth" and in alignment with our physical body when we find ourselves energetically fleeting or in other words....."spacing off."

The Base Chakra provides raw energy and is directly related to our instinctual nature. Our vitality, vigor and overall level of raw physical energy is provided by this center.
Physically the chakra governs lower digestive functions, bladder and bowel functions, sexual activity, etc. If this chakra is damaged tiredness, poor sleeping patterns, eating disorders, sexual dysfunction and waste elimination problems (like constipation) can occur.

This chakra also maintains the health of the skeletal structure and can be damaged by bone breaks anywhere in the body.

Since the Base chakra governs all of our instincts you can see that damage here will also have extreme emotional effects. Rage and anger are common when the centre is erratic in function, as can be episodes of violence. When it is blocked extreme depression bordering on suicidal behavior can occur. This chakra is depressed by alcohol and certain psychotropic drugs and will therefore suffer if consumed.

When you meditate on this Chakra it balances the physical body which controls the fight or flight syndrome. This is where you get the energy to get up with in the morning. It represents the characteristic of earth and the quality of solidity. Fear is a negative emotion emanating from this chakra.

From a wiccan perspective comes this this affirmation "The Universe looks after my needs. I trust life."

Exercises that stimulate the root chakra - stomping your feet upon the ground, marching, and doing squats; Dancing is very good for grounding. In the summer, go barefoot. House cleaning and cooking is also grounding. Hug a tree, take care of your plants.
Focusing on the color red can help bring your energetic body "down to earth" and in alignment with your physical body.

Open this Chakra by using colors, scents and crystals

Foods that fuel the root chakra -
Root vegetables: carrots, potatoes, parsnips, radishes, beets, onions, garlic, etc.
Protein-rich foods: eggs, meats, beans, tofu, soy products, peanut butter
Spices: horseradish, hot paprika, chives, cayenne, pepper

Gemstones that stimulate, cleanse, ground and energize the root chakra: Hematite, Black Tourmaline, Onyx, Agate, Bloodstone, Garnet, Ruby, Smoky Quartz

Flower Essences that stimulate, cleanse and energize the root chakra: Corn, Clematis, Rosemary
Essential Oils: Cedar, Clove, Cypress, Marjoram, Myrrh

Balanced energy: Centered, grounded, healthy, fully alive, unlimited physical energy, can manifest abundance. Takes good care of the body. People who have open root chakras love their lives - love their physical incarnation in their present bodies.

Excessive energy: Egoistic, domineering, greedy, sadistic, sexual energy entirely genital. Judgment and biased opinions.

Deficient energy: Lack of confidence weak, can't achieve goals, suicidal, sexual energy, feel unlovable, little interest in sex, masochistic.Fear and insecurity. Blockage in this energy center of the body can result in a core sense of unworthiness and self-doubt and shame.Thought forms such as "I don't deserve love," "I'm ashamed of who I am," and "I'm always misunderstood," are common in people with a blocked Root Chakra. They try to compensate for these feelings by acquiring, keeping and controlling material possessions, by becoming addicted to material things. The ultimate root chakra failure is suicide.

Illness: Drug addictions, anemia, cancer, arthritis, heart disease, gynecological problems, Aids, herpes, candida. Decreased immune system. Lower back pain. Constipation. Physical problems with the coccyx, anus and genitals are associated with the First Chakra.

The Root Chakra has been called 'the anchor of the spirit' and is related to a substance (located along the spinal column), that keeps the body in shape and when it does not function, diseases appear and the body enters into a process of deterioration.

Symptoms or tensions in the parts of the body controlled by this chakra indicate tensions in the parts of the person's consciousness related to this chakra. Some tension here is experienced as insecurity as a general perceptual filter. More tension is experienced as fear. More than that is experienced as a threat to survival.

The essence power that we acquire when our first chakra is activated and balanced is absolute stillness. When we can truly be still, we are aware of our own presence, we can instinctually feel our own body and our physical surroundings, we can completely relax and rest, we feel at home in our body, on Earth, wherever we are.
